How to work with the customer in the most efficient way?

Beginning designers often have little idea how to work with a client - how to talk, what to pay attention to, how to defend their position, how to convey their idea to the customer. Although we speak the same language, it is often very difficult for one person to understand another. And a designer, as a person who brings other people's dreams and ideas to life, must be able to understand others and be able to convey their thoughts.

In fact, it is not difficult if you understand what's what. And this skill can be acquired literally after three to five clients. But everyone always wants to be ready in advance, and this is a perfectly reasonable desire. Therefore, professional designers often pass on to their students not only the basics of working with materials, decor, colors, but also teach them how to work with people. And in this article, we will tell designers how they can learn to be understood. These are fairly simple and obvious tips, but remember that the devil is in the details and these simple tips are often the most effective.

Listen to the customer

The ability to listen to the customer is one of the most important skills for a designer. After all, if you do not thoroughly understand what the customer needs from you, you are unlikely to be able to bring it to life, except perhaps by chance. So at the beginning of your work, just give the customer the floor, let him tell you how he sees his future home, what he likes, what he doesn't like. Does he want a minimalist living room and a shabby chic bedroom? Great, the main thing is that he can tell you about it. But sometimes people don't know how to tell you what they need. In this case, you should prepare in advance a list of questions that are fundamentally important to you - colors, interior style, budget, functional features, etc. Feel free to ask and ask leading questions - this is an important part of your work, without which you will not be able to cope.

Speak "one language"

You should communicate with the customer in the style in which he communicates with you. If a simple person comes to you, without knowing any nuances, you don’t need to bombard him with terms that he won’t understand. If a business person comes to you, talking to you extremely politely and formally, you should not have “friendly conversations”, as you will only scare the person away. Information should be conveyed to the client in the form in which it is easiest to understand. And the style of communication plays an important role in this. Of course, you need to be consistently positive and friendly, but otherwise you should focus on the client.

Presentations

Each stage of work should be presented and explained to the customer. You must explain why you chose this color scheme, why you chose this particular furniture, wall and floor coverings, etc. It is the customer who needs presentations, as he must understand that you are working in his interests and solving his problems in this interior. Those. if porcelain stoneware is chosen as wall and floor covering for the bathroom, then you should explain why it is, what advantages this material has for the customer, why it is better than alternatives. So the customer will feel more confident and calm, since he is not an expert and cannot always understand the motives for choosing certain materials.

Objections

Naturally, you will not be able to create an ideal interior for your customer right away. Still, it is not so easy and often you have to change something in the design. And you should be okay with objections to your design. If the customer thinks that such a dining table in the kitchen does not suit him - calmly find out why he thinks so, what exactly he does not like, what alternatives he would like to see. And then suggest available alternatives. But in no case should you take objections as an attack on your professionalism, and you should definitely not ignore objections.

Your view

Perhaps at some point it will seem to you that the customer wants something that you do not like, and you would not choose this option. But remember that you are not doing the project for yourself. Therefore, your view of the interior should be purely professional. If the customer wants something that will not be functional, uncomfortable, then try to convey this to him, but do it calmly and with reason. Offer an alternative and try to find a compromise that suits both you and the customer.
